Sue Redican - Blasket Island Weaver website : http://www.dinglewest.com/sue.htm Weaving is a way of life for Sue Redican, who lives for six months of the year on the Blasket Island off the coast of Kerry. In April of each year Sue takes the ferry from Dun Chaoin to the Blasket Island and leaves reluctantly in October. Sue's craft shop is both colourful and traditional. All the rugs, hats, shawls, wall-hangings etc., are individually crafted by Sue. Using 100% wool from the local black-faced sheep and imported Jacobs sheep, Sue weaves a magic spell in each and every article. All of the colours are natural plant dyes created by Sue from the local plants and lichens. This method of dying the wool gives unique colours to all of the items - colours generally not found in commercial dyes. If you like to contact Sue please call : Blasket Island Boatmen, 066 915 64 22 e-mail : sueredicanweaver@yahoo.co.uk Should you not travel to the Blasket Island my work is available in the craft guild shop, An Gailearai Beag, Main Street, Dingle, Co. Kerry. |

| The Blasket Centre - Ionad an
Bhlascaoid Mhoir The Blasket Centre in Dún Chaoin, at the western end of the Dingle Peninsula, celebrates the Irish language and the distinctive character of the people who once lived on the Blasket Islands. A main focus of the Centre is the unique literary achievements of this isolated community off the Kerry coast which was evacuated in 1953.The exhibits include sections on weather and seasons, the place of loneliness, the sea, biographies, writers, and Islanders. It boasts state-of-the-art multi-media which will even teach you cúpla foca gaeilge (a few words of Irish)! Artwork is incorporated into the exhibits, including Cathy Carmen's "Women at the Well", Michael Quane's external stone sculpture of "The Islandman", and Róisín de Buitléar's glasswork wall, "The Journey", the largest secular glass work in Ireland. The Blasket Centre facilities include a video presentation, exhibition, research room, car/coach parking, restaurant, conference facilities, and bookshop. |
